Last month, New York Fashion Week unveiled the style dictates for the coming Spring-Summer, with Maybelline as its official beauty partner. Bringing the latest from the New York runways to the Philippine streets, Maybelline is making NYFW happen for Filipinas, allowing us to create NYFW-inspired looks with its S/S 2016 makeup collection.
Maybelline sent me a few items off the collection—in a cleverly designed runway-inspired box, no less!—earlier this week. After months of shuttling between a full-time corporate job and a full load in grad school, it was as great a time as any to get back on the proverbial (clothes) horse and flex them style muscles. Read on for my Maybelline S/S 2016 makeup review.
One of the hottest looks for S/S 2016 beauty is matte—clean, minimalist, and super fresh. I took an instant liking to this pressed powder with one swipe—the shade matched my skin tone so well that a before-and-after comparison wouldn’t have shown noticeable difference.
Maybelline White Superfresh pressed powder glides on smoothly and evenly in minutes, which is great for a girl whose day starts at 5am and ends at 11pm but still hopes to avoid the greasy look. The SPF 34 PA+++ sun protection doesn’t hurt. I’ve started bringing this in my every day purse.
I’m not a fan of cakey-looking face gunk (who is, anyway?) which is why I stick to light-formulation makeup whenever possible. I have a few tiny scars on my forehead and cheeks, and I find that the thicker it is, the more pronounced blemishes can get. I was delightfully surprised at how this little pressed powder delivers minimal coverage and just enough matte.
Just like floral inspirations in Spring-Summer fashion, dramatic eyes are never out of sight on the NYFW runways. Of course, all eye makeup, be it minimal or full-blown decadent, requires solid eyeliner work.
I personally like like mine in brown over black, so that I can control how simple or bold I line my eyes. I also prefer it in gel so I won’t have to retouch through the day. Maybelline’s aptly named Lasting Drama is both.
Complementing the eyeliner is Maybelline Color Tattoo 25-hour eyeshadow, a cream gel formulation that reminds me of my favorite Maybelline Dream Bouncy blush: easy to apply, easy to blend, and lasts forever.
I have a 24-piece makeup brush set, but for some reason, I end up doing better eyeshadow when I use my fingers to apply and blend. To road test the gel eyeshadow, I wanted to try varying intensities and thickness of application just to see if an ombré-smoky feel comes out.
It did. Coupled with a simple cat-eye using the Lasting Drama gel eyeliner and my trusty Maybelline Hypercurl mascara, this Creamy Beige gel eyeshadow shows serious potential. Am I glad I got two tubs.
I saved the fun part for last. You see, the night I shot this, I was coming from a gruelling week of midterm exams and surprise quizzes, out of which I got three difficult A’s. So despite the sleep deprivation, I was feeling all “girl-power” and these bold matte babies were exactly what I needed.
For every 10 times I fill in my eyebrows, curl my lashes and line my eyes, I use lipstick maybe once or twice. Between my love for eating and my penchant for kissing loved ones, there’s also an unexplained inevitability of staining clothing or furniture when I’m wearing one. That’s why whenever I do, I like to make it count. And nothing counts like bright electric pink.
Bright, bold lips took centerstage at several shows during NYFW, showcasing a plethora of beautiful matte hues against a clean-faced canvas. I’ve always liked popping on this shade of pink just because it’s an awesome day—maybe I’ll wear it on a gloomy one and see how it brightens up.
Now here’s a badass color that packs a whole lot of attitude. Maybelline Color Sensational Bold Matte lipstick in Mat05 lies somewhere in between a deep jewel-toned red with a slight hint of magenta.
It’s a delicious color—a bit flirty, a bit serious, all in all making for a strong, modern lip statement that’s hard to ignore.
Finally, we have the Mat04 Bold Matte lipstick. On the tube it looks like your classic “red” red, but depending on how much you apply, it produces a wonderful tangerine-tinged hue along with the red.
Unlike the first two colors, which I have in gloss or shimmer form, I’ve never really explored the orange side of the lipstick universe until this shoot. Suffice it to say I’ve just found a new favorite lip shade. •
All makeup, Maybelline. Bambi Chocolate contact lenses, Japanese Candy.
