Owning the trends: NYFW S/S 2016

#MaybellineNYFWxLoveChic presents the season’s top trends, reintrepreted in wearable, effortlessly chic outfits. For @maybellineph‘s Live From The Runway contest, select Filipina bloggers have been invited to create three OOTDs they would wear to go to New York Fashion Week given the chance. I gave myself an extra challenge: in the spirit of bringing trends from the New York runways to the streets of Manila, nothing must be extravagant or expensive. After poring over hundreds of looks from the NYFW S/S 2016 shows, here are mine!

Look 1: Navy Bevy (Lookbook | Chictopia)

As far as this season is concerned, it seems navy blue (Ralph Lauren, Altuzarra) is the new black, especially in menswear-inspired silhouettes (DKNY, Boss). Wide-legged trousers (Escada, Victoria Beckham) are also making a huge comeback, imbued with quirky ‘80s prints (Marc Jacobs, Libertine) that turn classic pieces into statements that pop. I pared down the look with sensible nude pointed pumps to keep it clean and feminine. Collared top, from a flea market. Wide-legged capri pants, River Island. Pointed pumps, Forever 21.

Look 2: Flowery Flurry (Lookbook | Chictopia)

“Florals. For spring. Groundbreaking.” Despite Miranda Priestly’s diss in The Devil Wears Prada, spring’s eternally ubiquitous print can be groundbreaking. Just as there are 400,000 flower species (yay science), there are myriad ways to do florals (3.1 Phillip Lim, Kate Spade). I went for edgy and brightly colored (Coach, Tommy Hilfiger) with a sheer floral bomber jacket (Rag and Bone, Roberto Cavalli) for a sporty vibe (Alexander Wang, Tory Burch). Dress and jacket, Bugis street market in Singapore. Platform heels, Bershka

Look 3: Bare Flair (Lookbook | Chictopia)

Cut-out sleeves and off-shoulders (Prabal Gurung, Alice + Olivia) appeared on many runways, as did hippie-inspired looks reminiscent of the ‘70s (Rachel Zoe, Michael Kors). Festival fashion and boho chic are Spring/Summer staples, but designers this season presented a refreshing take with airy, flowy pieces in clean, minimalist whites and neutrals (Calvin Klein, Tibi). Michael Kors called it earthy elegance, Rachel Zoe used the term “gypset” (jetsetting gypsy). Off-shoulder top and platform wedge booties, Forever 21. Pleated midi skirt, SM Woman

Beauty notes: makeup, Maybelline S/S 2016 makeup. Contact lenses, Japanese Candy. Skin care, Skin Rejuve. Nails, Beauty & Butter.
