High school is a tricky time, especially around prom and graduation season. Personally, shopping for makeup was a trial-and-error process. I knew next to nothing about getting the right products for the look I want, let alone for my features. Now that I’ve got some makeup tricks up my sleeve, here are my prom makeup essentials to start you with.
Skin prep (graduation makeup essentials)
The secret to flawless makeup is clean, well-moisturized skin. It lays the foundation for, well, foundation!
Coverage (graduation makeup essentials)
A liquid foundation with a fluffy, “whipped cream” consistency blends on easily, for full, natural-looking coverage that looks like second skin. Add a dusting of silky, lightweight powder foundation to set.
Dimension (graduation makeup essentials)
Foundation evens out the skin tone, but it also “flattens” the shadows and highlights that give your face depth. Shade with a contour powder or bronzer under the cheekbones going up the sides of the cheeks, on the temples, jawline, and down the sides of the nose. For a luminous glow, use a strobing stick or highlighter above the cheeks, on the center of the forehead, middle of the nose, brow bones, cupid’s bow, and center of the chin. Apply blush on the apples of the cheeks.
Eyebrows (graduation makeup essentials)
Full, natural-looking brows are still all the rage! Whether you like a slight arch or a youthful straight shape, achieve the look by drawing an outline, filling it in, smudging the inner corners for a gradual fade, and topping off with brow mascara.
Eye makeup(graduation makeup essentials)
You’ll basically need just an eyeshadow palette of neutrals, nudes, shimmer, and a few pops of color. A cream color all over the lids as your base eyeshadow. Shimmer on the inner corners, brow bones, and under the lower lash line. Your color of choice on the middle lids, its darker counterpart on the creases and outer lids. The same dark eyeshadow to line the lower lids, liquid eyeliner for the upper lids. So long as you blend and smudge well, this routine always works.
Lips (graduation makeup essentials)
A huge beauty trend this 2017? Soft, creamy, luscious lips in bright and strong colors. For a more cohesive look, choose a lipstick shade that matches, complements, or belongs in the same color family as your main eyeshadow color.
Finishing (prom makeup essentials)
For prom or graduation, you’ll want your makeup to stay looking the same while you dance and party the night away. The secret to long-lasting makeup is to use liquid or cream and set with their powder counterparts (e.g. cream blush + powder blush in the same color) but since we’re talking essentials, the easy way is to use setting spray! It works just as well as the other method, only faster.
